NEWNHAM PADDOX ART PARK TO RAISE AWARENESS OF PLIGHT OF REFUGEES

‘Refugee’ by Pete Thornley

In May 2005 an exciting new installation by controversial artist Pete Thornley will be unveiled in the historic grounds of Newnham Paddox Art Park.

The work, funded by Arts Council West Midlands, is constructed from a 3 metre square black metal container with a glass roof and is entitled ‘Refugee’. Etched on to the glass is a quote from John Berger concerning the plight of the refugee:-

‘the sky is all that is left to appeal to in certain circumstances”

Visitors will be able to enter the intimidating space and view the projection of the quote onto the sky above. The space will evoke empathy and allow contemplation on the cry for sanctuary.

The artist, Pete Thornley, recognises the dichotomy of installing a piece highlighting the plight of refugees in the grounds which have been the ancestral home of the Earls of Denbigh since the 15th century but feels that the juxtaposition of the landed and the landless will further highlight the sensitive topic.

Pete says “The work effectively punches a black hole in the landscape which immediately induces an elemental feeling of loss. It is my hope that the thought process begins as viewers approach the work and will develop through entering the space and contemplating the sky above’

‘This installation, which addresses such a sensitive and contentious subject, has been welcomed to Newnham Paddox Art Park and I hope that ‘Refugee’ will raise the awareness for those torn from their homelands by starvation, torture and fear as well as those unjustly incarcerated around the world.’

The work can be seen at Newnham Paddox Art Park from the start of the 2005 season in May   - preview Wednesday May 4th;.
